MEETING LOCATION AND DATE
The OSEWG Workshop on Robots Supporting Human Science and Exploration will be held August 5–6, 2009, at the Lunar and Planetary Institute (LPI), located in the Universities Space Research Association (USRA) building, 3600 Bay Area Boulevard, Houston, Texas, 77058.
When: August 5–6, 2009
Where: Houston, Texas
MISSION OBJECTIVE AND PURPOSE OF THE WORKSHOP
This workshop will investigate how robotics might best be used to support a sustainable program of human exploration and science on the Moon. The objective is to identify areas where high-priority lunar science needs can be met with space robotics capabilities, while fostering improved understanding and communication between the communities. The workshop will engage the Lunar Science and Space Robotics communities to include expertise from both domains. This workshop is intended to be a follow-on to the 2007 OSEWG Workshop on Architecture Issues Related to Sampling.
Topics may include:
Construction, site preparation, infrastructure emplacement
Outpost maintenance and inspection
In situ analysis, measurements, instruments
Robotic sample collection, processing, high-grading, and planetary protection
Robotic reconnaissance before human crew activity: surveys, sampling
Robotic assistance during human crew activity, or in parallel to human crew activity
Robotic follow-up after human crews: documentation, observations
The Optimizing Science and Exploration Working Group (OSEWG), Lunar Exploration Analysis Group (LEAG), and Space Autonomy and Robotics Technical Committee (SARTC) are working closely with the science and engineering communities to make this workshop relevant and useful to a variety of planning activities across NASA. We are looking for a good balance of scientists, engineers, and operations experts, especially those with experience in field work and flight projects. Contributions from the private sector and international participants are welcome. A report will be produced as a NASA publication, and will be available electronically on the OSEWG website.
There is no registration fee associated with this workshop. However, participants are asked to register in advance using the electronic registration form provided so that the meeting organizers will have an accurate headcount for planning purposes. The advance registration deadline is August 4, 2009. Registration after that date will be on site.
Participants are responsible for making their own travel and hotel reservations. For your convenience, a list of local hotels and a local area map showing their locations are provided on the official website.
